The University of Bologna ranks ninth in the world among universities most committed to sustainability. This result comes from the latest edition of the GreenMetric ranking, which assesses the actions and policies adopted by universities in the field of environmental sustainability. This year’s ranking includes more than 2,000 universities.
The latest results confirm the University of Bologna as the top-ranking Italian university for the tenth consecutive year. And there is more: this year, the University of Bologna has also been recognised as the most sustainable university in Southern Europe. The University of Bologna also achieved particularly strong results in the individual areas assessed: 2nd in the world for governance and digitalisation; 3rd in the world for education; 3rd in the world for transport and sustainable mobility.
These results earned the University of Bologna recognition at the GreenMetric Awards, which honour the world’s most sustainable universities. The awards were presented during the annual GreenMetric conference, held this year in Baku at Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University.
“Sustainability is a responsibility that universities must take on directly, through research, education and concrete policies to protect the environment,” says Rector Giovanni Molari. “The result achieved once again this year by the University of Bologna in the GreenMetric World University Rankings confirms the value of the path we have taken. This commitment translates into concrete action, as demonstrated by our recently presented Energy Plan, through which we are accelerating our progress towards greater energy independence. These results encourage us to continue working with determination towards an increasingly sustainable future”.
The GreenMetric ranking was launched by Universitas Indonesia in 2010 and is meant as a way of getting universities from all over the world to commit to the environmental effort. The ranking evaluates institutions based on their green actions and policies, with particular attention to climate change, water and energy consumption, waste recycling, sustainable transportation, investment in research, and educational efforts in these areas.
