AAPE, an andrology outpatient clinic for people with epilepsy recently opened at Pavilion 1 of Policlinico di Sant'Orsola in collaboration with the University of Bologna and Associazione Italiana Contro l’Epilessia, has been active for a few weeks now. This physical and virtual space offers a new opportunity for men suffering from epilepsy, that is, to take care of their sexual and reproductive issues.
While the effect of epilepsy on female fertility has long been investigated, andrological issues are still often very much underestimated. Despite scientific evidence suggesting a correlation between the disease’s neurological disorders, the side effects of drug therapies, and sexual and reproductive dysfunction, these aspects are frequently overlooked in males. The absence of a structured pathway capable of accompanying these people over time often results in tardy check-ups and situations that cannot always be resolved.
AAPE sets out to reverse this trend and shine a spotlight on the problem, offering patients a multidisciplinary approach involving neurologists, andrologists, urologists, endocrinologists, gynaecologists, psychiatrists and psychologists, thus guaranteeing comprehensive support in the treatment of these sensitive issues. The outpatient clinic, run by specialists from the Department of Urology, directed by Prof. Eugenio Brunocilla, and that of Andrology, directed by Prof. Fulvio Colombo, may be contacted, either directly or through your neurologist, by emailing aape@aosp.bo.it.
