A New Design Centre in the Former Manifattura Tabacchi Technopole

An agreement between the University of Bologna, the Emilia-Romagna Region, and STMicroelectronics strengthens the longstanding collaboration between the French-Italian semiconductor company and the University of Bologna

The agreement aims to support the connection of STMicroelectronics, a French-Italian world leading semiconductor company, with the research ecosystem and technological infrastructure of the Emilia-Romagna region. It also includes the commitment to place a new design centre in the areas of the Bologna Technopole, reinforcing the longstanding collaboration of the company with the University of Bologna. This summarises the content of the Memorandum of Understanding signed today by the University of Bologna, the Emilia-Romagna Region, and STMicroelectronics, after visiting to the Bologna Technopole.

STMicroelectronics, a world leader company in the semiconductor industry with clients in all electronic application sectors, aims to establish a new design centre in Bologna in conjunction with the Region’s innovative system. The intention is to benefit from the multidisciplinary know-how of the University, with which it has already been working for decades.

“For over twenty years, the University of Bologna and STMicroelectronics have been collaborating on projects and activities of high scientific and industrial value. This is why - said the Rector of the University of Bologna, Giovanni Molari - we are pleased to renew and strengthen our research partnership, which is a point of reference for our territory. We are glad to create the conditions for a stronger presence of STMicroelectronics in Bologna, which I am sure will result in significant developments and innovation in the Emilia-Romagna region.”

This agreement strengthens the relationship between the University of Bologna and STMicroelectronics. For many years, there has been an active collaboration that led, in 1998, to the signing of an agreement between the parties for the establishment of a joint laboratory at the Advanced Research Centre on Electronic Systems “Ercole De Castro”. This partnership was further extended to include research activities in the field of chemistry and materials with the Department of Chemistry “Ciamician.” The University intends to provisionally and exclusively allocate a portion of its property in Bologna to STMicroelectronics, pending the future establishment of the new design centre at the Technopole.
