A Renewed Programme for the University "Classics"

"Classici antichi e moderni: i saperi dell’Alma Mater" (Ancient and Modern Classics: the Wisdom of the University of Bologna): this is the title of the new series of events organized by the University (9 May – 12 December). They aim to disseminate knowledge across various disciplines and expand the panorama of Classics to include Albert Hirschman's social science, alongside Levi, Mozart, and Marconi, addressing the theme of the relationship between body, brain, and consciousness.

Ancient and modern classics will be the focus of the meetings, with the Greeks and Latins taking centre stage at the first event on Thursday, 9 May, at 9:00 PM in the Aula Absidale di Santa Lucia (Via de' Chiari, 25/a - Bologna), marking the connection with the traditional series that has been a significant cultural event for the city for over twenty years.

"L'uomo e la natura: un'amicizia impossibile” (Man and Nature: An Impossible Friendship?) is the title of the inaugural event, featuring Prof. Ivano Dionigi and involving the Department of Classical Philology and Italian Studies.

At the heart of the second appointment, on Thursday, 23 May, at 8:30 PM, at DAMSlab (Piazzetta P.P. Pasolini, 5/b - Bologna), is "Il triangolo dell'individualità: corpo, cervello e coscienza" (The Triangle of Individuality: Body, Brain, and Consciousness), curated by the Departments of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences and Philosophy.

Guglielmo Marconi will be the focus of the third event on Thursday, 17 October, at 8:30 PM, at the Oratory of San Filippo Neri (Via Manzoni, 5 - Bologna), exploring a journey from telecommunications to telemedicine, with professors from the Departments of Medical and Surgical Sciences, Electrical and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi", Industrial Engineering, Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering.

In November, the series continues with "Le retoriche della crisi: tra dubbio e fiducia" (The Rhetorics of Crisis: Between Doubt and Trust), on Thursday, 14 November, at 8:30 PM in the Aula Absidale di Santa Lucia, curated by the Departments of Political and Social Sciences, Economics, Sociology, and Law of Economics.

"Così fan tutti: Mozart e i paesaggi sonori del suo e del nostro tempo" (All: Mozart and the Soundscapes of His and Our Time), the title of the fifth meeting scheduled for Thursday, 5 December, at 6:00 PM in the Aula Absidale di Santa Lucia, curated by the Departments of Arts, Classical Philology and Italian Studies, History Culture Civilization, and the La Soffitta Centre.

The last event of the year and the series, on Thursday, 12 December, at 6:00 PM in the Aula Absidale di Santa Lucia, will be dedicated to "Macchine pensanti? Letteratura, scienza, Primo Levi" (Thinking Machines? Literature, Science, Primo Levi), with professors from the Departments of Physics and Astronomy "Augusto Righi", Chemistry "Giacomo Ciamician", Industrial Chemistry "Toso Montanari", Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmacy and Biotechnology, Sciences for Quality of Life, and Classical Philology and Italian Studies.

The traditional classics series, organized by the "La permanenza del Classico" Study Centre since 2002, celebrated its twentieth edition in 2021. After a year of suspension, it was reintroduced last year with three new events.

This year, the University involved all Unibo Departments for a new series that values all disciplines, while maintaining a focus on raising awareness among national and local institutions, promoting public opinion, and fostering collaboration with secondary schools.
