Dialogue on investigative journalism and women's rights violations worldwide

The event “Investigative Journalism and Literature: Stories of Discrimination and Violence Against Women in Afghanistan, Iran, Morocco, and the United States” is set for Friday, 1st March at 5 p.m. It will be held in the Aula Poeti of the Department of Political and Social Sciences - SPS (Strada Maggiore, 45 - Bologna). The CoMediaS Research Centre - Communication Media and Public Space of the SPS Department is organizing the event in collaboration with the Association of Female University Professors in Bologna and the Libera-Mente Civica association.

Journalists Liliana Faccioli Pintozzi, author of Daughters of Eve: The Battle of Women for Life and Freedom in Iran, Afghanistan, and the United States, and Loubna Serraj, author of Pourvu qu'il soit de bonne humeur, will discuss their works. The dialogue will include Prof. Cristina Demaria, Delegate for Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity at the University of Bologna, Magistrate Stefano Dambruoso, Prof. Chiara Alvisi, President of AdDu, and Prof. Pina Lalli, Director of CoMediaS.

The two books prompt reflection on the battles against discrimination and violence, as well as the possible facets of the public role of investigative journalism. From them emerges a contemplation on how today journalism is more vibrant than ever, particularly when brave women actively engage in or narrate it using diverse languages, delving deep into such highly relevant themes.

Liliana Faccioli Pintozzi's investigative journalism documents the testimonies of many women (and men) in different countries like Afghanistan, Iran, and the United States who stand at the forefront of battles for the complete recognition of their rights. They are protagonists of a historical change to which the journalist lends voice and influence, thereby enriching contemporary public discourse.

The core of Loubna Serra's novel lies in the narrative of an investigative report on domestic violence in Morocco. Within it, the protagonist journalist encounters witnesses who unfold the diverse aspects of violence and discrimination, along with the evolving nature of the battles over time. The story unveils the deceptive and silent shroud of prejudices and victim-blaming, even in instances where violence turns fatal. Only the novelist holds the chance to give voice to those succumbing to the lethal blows of the murderous husband.
