UniBo Motorsport Wins the MotoStudent International Competition for the Third Consecutive Time

The Vega electric motorcycle prototype triumphed at the MotorLand Aragón Circuit in Spain – a success made possible by the close collaboration between the University of Bologna and the Ducati Foundation

The UniBo Motorsport team has won the Best MotoStudent Team 2025 title in the Electric category, thanks to the outstanding performance of its new prototype, Vega #88. The victory came at the end of the eighth edition of the MotoStudent International Competition, held at the MotorLand Aragón Circuit in Spain. This marks UniBo Motorsport’s third consecutive world title, following the wins in 2021 with the Minerva prototype and in 2023 with Nemesi.

“This extraordinary result is the outcome of an educational, technological and sporting journey of excellence, made possible by the strong and strategic partnership with the Ducati Foundation,” said Rector Giovanni Molari. “The synergistic collaboration between the University of Bologna and Ducati is a virtuous example of integration between academia and industry, capable of generating innovation, skills and tangible achievements.”

“We are extremely proud of the UniBo Team’s victory. Thanks to the collaboration between the University of Bologna and the Ducati Foundation, students can experience firsthand what happens behind the scenes in our world, working side by side with our engineers and learning about the technical culture that underpins our excellence,” said Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati and President of the Ducati Foundation. “As Plutarch reminds us, ‘The young mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.’ The MotoStudent project certainly ignites passion for applying STEM disciplines and gives theoretical study a completely new and more engaging light. I would like to thank Rector Professor Molari for his support, Professor Nicolò Cavina, the true driving force behind this project from the start, and Engineer Simone Di Piazza, Head of Innovation and R&D Services at Ducati, for his invaluable contribution to its continued success.”

Since 2018, when UniBo Motorsport won the Best Rookie award for its first electric motorcycle prototype, Alpha Leonis, the team has shown steady growth, achieving results that speak for themselves: four prototypes, three world titles, and an internationally recognised reputation.

“These achievements are the result of intense, multidisciplinary and passionate work by students, as well as the strategic collaboration with the Ducati Foundation, which has provided essential know-how, expertise and technical support,” said Nicolò Cavina, Head of the MotoStudent Project at the University of Bologna. “The synergy with Ducati is a fundamental driver of innovation and training.”

At the Aragón circuit, 42 teams from universities around the world competed in the electric category. Despite the ever-increasing technical and competitive level of the challenge, the new UniBo Motorsport prototype showed clear superiority from the very first tests.

The Vega electric motorcycle won the Gymkhana (agility and handling) test, took first place in the Top Speed category for the highest recorded speed on track, and secured pole position in the qualifying sessions. In the final race, held on Sunday, rider Alessio Aldrovandi demonstrated determination and skill, earning a valuable second place after seven fiercely contested laps.

Additional results included second place in the dynamic tests, third place in the technical project, report and communication category, and first place in the Best Design category, recognising the quality and innovation of the Vega prototype.

Together, these results led inevitably to the Best MotoStudent Team 2025 title – the third consecutive victory for UniBo Motorsport, confirming the vision and commitment that have long guided the University of Bologna’s MotoStudent project. And the journey continues: work on the next prototype for the 2027 edition will begin soon, with the goal of continuing to innovate, educate and – why not – win again.

UniBo Motorsport’s participation in the competition was also made possible thanks to the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region, as part of the “Race for the Future – Students Mobility Competitions @University of Bologna” project (Rif_pa2024-22610/RER, CUP J56F2400012000).
