QS Ranking: The University of Bologna Ranks First in Italy 19 Times

In the latest edition of the prestigious international ranking, the University of Bologna holds the highest number of top positions at the national level and is among the world's top 50 in 6 subjects

19 first places in Italy, one more than last year. The University of Bologna has obtained the highest number of top positions at the national level in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which evaluates the placement of universities in individual subjects.

The University of Bologna ranks first in Italy for: Agriculture & Forestry; Anthropology; Chemistry; Communication & Media Studies; Dentistry; Earth & Marine Science; Education; English Language and Literature; Geography; Geology; Geophysics; History; Hospitality and Leisure Management; Law; Linguistics; Modern Languages; Sport-related subjects; Statistics & Operational research; Veterinary Science.

In addition, the University of Bologna ranks among the top 50 universities in the world in 6 subjects: Classics & Ancient History (25th place), Archaeology (41st  place), Law (41st place), Geography (43rd place), Modern Languages (43rd place), Veterinary Science (44th place). It ranks between 51st and 100th place in 16 subjects and between 101st and 260th place in 25 subjects.

Overall, reflecting its widespread excellence and a multidisciplinary soul, the University of Bologna is ranked in 47 subjects, one more than last year (Marketing), and has improved its position in 11 cases.

Among the most notable results, Mathematics climbed 9 places, Agriculture & Forestry gained 8 places and Geography entered the top 50.

Looking at the ranking’s five macro areas, the University of Bologna confirms its place in the global top 50 with Arts & Humanities (42nd place, 8 places higher than last year) and among the top 100 in Social Sciences & Management (64th place), Natural Sciences (94th place), and Life Sciences & Medicine (99th place). Meanwhile, the Engineering and Technology macro area reaches 111th place worldwide.

In the latest edition of the general ranking, QS World University Rankings (published in June 2024), the University of Bologna reached 133rd place out of more than 1500 international institutions. This marks its highest position ever, with a 21-place jump compared to the previous year. At the European level, the University of Bologna gained 30 places in one year and reached 48th place (QS World University Rankings – Europe).

The QS World University Rankings by Subject draws upon the data collected for the QS global ranking, published in June 2024. For each of the subjects in the ranking and the five macro-areas, the score assigned to each university is based on a weighted combination of five indicators: Academic Reputation Survey; Employer Reputation Survey; Citations per Paper; H-Index; IRN – International Research Network (publications with international co-authors).
