QS Rankings, the University of Bologna keeps improving: 25 subjects sit in the top 100 worldwide, with 6 of these in the top 50, and 18 are number one in Italy

In the new edition of this prestigious international ranking, the results of the University of Bologna improved compared to last year’s. Worldwide, the University of Bologna now has three more subjects among the top 100 and two more among the top 50, while at the national level it has five more in number one position. Moreover, the University reaches the top 100 worldwide in four faculty areas


The new edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject sees the University of Bologna among the top 100 universities worldwide in 25 different subjects, adding three more to last year's count. Six of these, two more than last year, sit in the top 50: Classics & Ancient History (22nd), Agriculture & Forestry (40th), Archaeology (44th), Law (46th), Modern Languages (49th), Dentistry (50th).

Results improved at the national level too. Here, the University of Bologna ranks first in 18 subjects, five more than last year: Agriculture & Forestry, Law, Modern Languages, Dentistry, Anthropology, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, History, Hospitality & Leisure Management, Social Policy & Administration, Statistics & Operational Research, Chemistry, Sports-related Subjects, Communication & Media Studies, Earth & Marine Sciences, Linguistics, Education.

Overall, the University of Bologna ranks among the top 200 in 45 subjects, with four of these being new entries: Veterinary Science, Anatomy, Hospitality & Leisure Management, Nursing.

As regards the five faculty areas of the ranking, the University of Bologna sits in the top 100 worldwide for Arts & Humanities (53rd), Social Sciences & Management (62nd), Natural Sciences (82nd) e Engineering & Technology (83rd), and ranks 107th in Life Sciences & Medicine.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject has been compiled by taking into consideration more than 15,200 degree programmes of 1,543 universities in 88 countries. The ranking is based on four indicators with a different weighting in each subject. The four indicators of the ranking are: Academic Reputation, i.e. the academic prestige of universities in the world; Employer Reputation, i.e. how employers evaluate graduates they recruit; Citations per Paper, i.e. the scientific impact of research of this or that university; H-index, i.e. a way of measuring both the productivity and impact of the published work of researchers.
