AiFOS Thesis Award for Three University of Bologna Students

Alice Caporale, Alessia Cantelmi, and Silvia Turci were recognised for their contribution to safety, sustainability, and inclusion in the world of work

Alice Caporale, Alessia Cantelmi, and Silvia Turci, three University of Bologna students, are among the winners of the 2024 Thesis Award from the AiFOS Foundation (Italian Association of Trainers and Occupational Safety Operators). The award was presented to nine students from all over Italy who, through their studies, have helped to promote safety, sustainability, and inclusion in the workplace.

Alice
With her PhD thesis in Mechanics and Advanced Engineering Sciences entitled Integrating the age factor in designing industrial environments and workstations in the workforce ageing era, Alice Caporale analysed the physical risks in industrial environments in relation to an ageing workforce. Her study aimed to enhance female and senior workers’ comfort, performance, experience, and skills.

Alessia
In the thesis Work and environment: from the conflict of values to participation, law graduate Alessia Cantelmi explored the regulatory challenges and opportunities arising from the integration of labour law and environmental protection.

Silvia
As part of her Master's in Safety and Prevention in the Work Environment, with the thesis Fire risk assessment related to the presence of lithium batteries on handling equipment in industrial environments, Silvia Turci investigated the fire risk associated with the use of lithium batteries in order to identify the best extinguishing agent and the most suitable prevention and protection measures to implement.

This year’s AiFOS Thesis Award, entitled “Silent synergies: enhancing safety, sustainability, and inclusion in the world of work”, values the contribution of people advancing the idea that social and work well-being are the starting point for sustainable community development, embracing the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
