The University of Bologna Among the World’s Top Ten Most Sustainable Universities

This is confirmed by the latest edition of the GreenMetric ranking, which evaluates universities’ actions for environmental sustainability. The University of Bologna ranks first in Italy for the eighth consecutive year and has reached ninth place in the global rankings

The University of Bologna ranks among the top ten universities worldwide for sustainability. This recognition comes from the 2024 edition of the GreenMetric ranking, which has evaluated universities’ actions and policies on environmental sustainability for the past fifteen years.

The new data, published today, reaffirm the University’s leadership in sustainability within Italy for the eighth year in a row and highlight its significant rise to ninth place in the global ranking- three positions higher than in the 2023 edition. When the University first participated in the GreenMetric evaluation in 2013, it ranked 183rd worldwide.

With this historic entry into the global top 10, the University of Bologna is also among the winners of the GreenMetric Awards, presented today at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, during the annual GreenMetric conference.

“The University of Bologna is proud of this achievement, which recognizes our deep commitment to sustainability and challenges us to aim even higher,” said Rector Giovanni Molari. “In times of climate change and energy crises, universities are called not only to educate and conduct research but also to lead by example. This means acting responsibly, demonstrating that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand, fostering collaboration across disciplines and with external partners, and creating innovative solutions that can guide the construction of a more sustainable world.”

The GreenMetric ranking was launched by Universitas Indonesia in 2010 and it aims to engage universities worldwide in a shared commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The ranking evaluates institutions based on their green actions and policies, with particular attention to climate change, water and energy consumption, waste recycling, sustainable transportation, investment in research, and educational efforts in these areas.
